Caution
Take care not to confuse this grammar point with the similar-sounding phrase にあって when あって is the て-form of the verb 遭う. In a sentence like 台風にあって 'to be caught in a typhoon', 遭う means 'to encounter' (usually something undesirable). The あって in the grammar discussed here comes from ある, 'to be/exist'.
