Explanation
とは is an expressive pattern often found at the end of a clause or sentence to convey a strong sense of surprise, disbelief, or astonishment. It indicates that the preceding statement is something the speaker finds remarkable or hard to believe. In English, this nuance is similar to phrases like 'I can't believe that (A)' or 'to think that (A)', which highlight an emotional reaction without explicitly defining it.
とは is formed by combining the quotative particle と with the topic-marking particle は. This construction effectively takes the entire preceding clause and presents it as the topic of the speaker's unspoken astonishment or shock, emphasizing it as the source of their reaction.
- まさかあの田中さんが犬を飼うとは!何があったんだろう。I'd never have guessed Tanaka would get a dog! I wonder what happened.
- テストがこんなに難しいとは思わなかったよ。I didn't think that the test was going to be this difficult.
- 山田くんがこんなに料理が上手だったとは…なんで隠してたの?I had no idea that you were such a great cook, Yamada… Why were you hiding it from us?
When とは is preceded by a word like など, it adds the nuance that 'the very idea of something like (A)' is what the speaker finds so surprising or unbelievable.
- 親友がそんなことをするなどとは想像もしていなかったが、これが現実だ。I never imagined my best friend would do something like that, but I guess this is reality.
- まさかお気に入りのレストランが閉店していたなどとは…I had no idea that my favorite restaurant had closed down…
Caution
While とは frequently appears at the end of an unfinished thought, leaving the speaker's exact emotion implied, it is also possible to explicitly state the reaction (such as 'I was surprised' or 'it's unbelievable') immediately after.
- 彼女があの難関の試験に合格したとは驚きだ。I'm astonished that she passed that incredibly difficult exam.
