~てからと言うもの
After, Since, Ever since then
Structure
Phrase (A)。 それから + というもの + Phrase (B)
Explanation
てからというもの builds upon the basic grammar of てから ('after A'), adding emphasis to highlight a significant, continuous change. It is best translated as 'ever since (A)', signaling that a new condition (B) started at point (A) and has continued ever since. While it literally breaks down to something like 'the event that started from (A)', it's used to stress the ongoing result of that initial trigger.
This grammar point always attaches to the て-form of a verb, just like its simpler counterpart てから.
- ペットを飼い始めてからというもの、毎日がにぎやかで楽しくなった。Ever since I got a pet, every day has become lively and fun.
- 自炊するようになってからというもの、体の調子がずっと良い。Ever since I started cooking for myself, I've been in much better health.
- 田舎に引っ越してからというもの、早起きが習慣になった。Ever since I moved to the countryside, waking up early has become a habit.
You might also encounter からというもの attached to それ at the start of a sentence. In this pattern, それ refers back to the event or situation described in the preceding sentence.
- 彼は大学の入学試験に落ちた。それからというもの、遊ぶのをやめて猛勉強を始めた。He failed his university entrance exam. Ever since that happened, he stopped messing around and began to study intensely.
- 去年、事故で大けがをした。それからというもの、健康に気をつけるようになった。I was badly injured in an accident last year. Ever since then, I've started to be more careful about my health.
Caution
Because this grammar pattern emphasizes a continuous state over a period of time, it sounds unnatural to use it for events that just occurred. It is reserved for situations where a reasonable amount of time has passed since the initial event (A), though what is considered 'reasonable' can change depending on the context.
