Explanation
からする is a somewhat formal expression that follows a number or counter to show that the given figure is the lowest possible estimate. It is typically translated as 'at least (A)', 'no less than (A)', or 'upwards of (A)'.
This grammar point combines the particle から (from) with the verb する (to do). The structure can be understood quite literally, suggesting that a value 'starts from (A)' and goes up from there, with the exact total being unknown to the speaker.
- え、そのバッグ、新品で買ったの?三十万からするでしょ?すごい!Whoa, you bought that bag new? It must have cost at least 300,000 yen, right? Amazing!
- 結婚式って普通、三百万円からするらしいよ。I hear that wedding ceremonies usually cost 3,000,000 yen or more.
- あの車は中古でも五百万円からするそうだ。I hear that car costs upwards of 5,000,000 yen, even used.
からの can function as a direct equivalent to からする in many cases. However, since の is a particle that connects nouns, からの must be followed directly by another noun, making its application slightly more restricted than からする.
- そのコンサートには10万人からのファンが集まった。Over 100,000 fans gathered for that concert.
- 昨日のデモでは千人からの参加者がいたらしい。It seems there were over 1,000 participants in yesterday's protest.
Caution
Because からする is used to give a rough estimate, it typically appears with numbers or amounts that are significantly large. The speaker uses it to stress that they don't know the precise figure. As a result, using it with small, easily known amounts can sound strange.
- 150円からするジュースを買ったら、まずかった。When I bought a juice that started from 150 yen, it tasted bad. (Unnatural Japanese)
Caution
While there can be some overlap, からする is most commonly heard when discussing prices or costs. からの is frequently used for quantities of people or things. For physical measurements like weight, size, or distance, a similar grammar point, からある, is preferred. からある will be discussed in a separate entry.
