とも無く
Absentmindedly, Mindlessly, Unconsciously, Without paying attention
Structure
(1) ともなしに
(2) Verb + と
Explanation
The patterns ともなく and ともなしに express that an action (A) was performed without any specific intention or focus, which then led to an unexpected event (B). They can be translated as 'while idly doing (A), (B) happened', or 'without really thinking about (A), (B)'.
This grammar is formed by attaching the particle と, the adverbial particle も, and the conjunctive form of the い-Adjective ない to the dictionary form of a verb. A literal interpretation would be something along the lines of 'without any particular intent to do so, while doing (A), (B) occurred'.
- 窓の外を眺めるともなく眺めていたら、珍しい鳥が飛んできた。While I was idly gazing out the window, a rare bird flew by.
- 本を読むともなく読んでいたら、心に残る言葉を見つけた。I was casually reading a book when I found a phrase that really stuck with me.
The structure ともなしに is almost identical, but it uses the noun なし ('without') followed by the particle に, rather than the conjugated form of the adjective ない.
- 車でラジオを聞くともなしに聞いていたら、懐かしい曲が流れてきた。I was half-listening to the radio in the car when a nostalgic song came on.
- スマホをいじるともなしにいじっていたら、昔の友達の結婚報告を見かけた。I was just aimlessly scrolling on my phone when I happened to see a marriage announcement from an old friend.
Both ともなく and ともなしに frequently appear in sentences ending with たら. This combination highlights the specific moment that an unexpected event occurred during the mindless activity. It is important to note that while the initial action is conscious (e.g., watching TV, walking), the subsequent discovery or event that results from it is entirely unintentional.
