あっての
Exist only because of or due to, Owe everything to
Structure
Explanation
The pattern あっての is used to stress that B would not be possible or could not exist without A. It conveys the idea that 'B is entirely thanks to A', or 'B's existence is wholly dependent on A'. This grammar point is formed from the て-form of the verb ある, meaning 'to exist', combined with the particle の.
This structure connects two nouns, with Noun A coming before あっての and Noun B coming after it.
- チームの協力あっての成功ですから、一人で頑張っても意味がありません。This success is only possible because of the team's cooperation, so there's no point in just one person trying hard on their own.
- 何よりもまず健康が第一です。健康あっての毎日ですからね。Health comes first, before anything else. After all, our daily lives depend entirely on our health.
あっての is typically used in situations where B benefits from A, carrying a nuance that B's existence is a positive outcome dependent on A, often implying gratitude.
The particle が can optionally be placed after Noun A, right before あっての, though it is frequently left out.
- どんなに辛いことがあっても、家族があっての私だから、乗り越えられます。No matter how tough things get, I can overcome it because I wouldn't be who I am without my family.
Fun Fact
You can think of あっての as a derivative of the fundamental grammar point がある, meaning 'to have' or 'there is'. The key difference is that the て-form creates a logical link, indicating 'because (A) exists...', while the following の particle modifies Noun B. This structure often leads into a concluding statement using grammar like から or ので to explain the consequence or reason.
