Explanation
Building on ～るまでだ, which expresses that 'there is no other choice but to (A)', ～たまでだ functions in a very similar manner. By using the past tense of a verb, it conveys the idea that 'what was done was simply (A), and nothing more'. This nuance is often translated as 'I just (A)' or 'I simply (A)', indicating that the speaker does not consider their action to be particularly significant.
Just like its non-past counterpart, ～たまでだ can be swapped with ～たまでのことだ. This alternative form adds a little more emphasis while retaining the same fundamental meaning.
- どうしてそんなに怒っているの？僕は本当のことを言ったまでだ。Why are you so upset? I simply told the truth.
- いえいえ、財布が落ちていたので、拾ったまでです。Oh no, it's nothing. I just picked up your wallet since you dropped it.
- 今日の会議の資料について確認したかったから、電話したまでのことだ。I only called because I wanted to confirm something about the materials for today's meeting.
- お礼なんていりませんよ。自分の仕事をしたまでですから。There's no need to thank me. I was simply doing my job.
Because this grammar pattern downplays the significance of an action, it is frequently used to express modesty. It implies that the speaker only did what was expected or necessary, so any praise they are receiving is not warranted.
Caution
Both ～るまでだ and ～たまでだ can only be used when referring to the actions of the speaker, or a group that the speaker belongs to.
- 先生は質問に答えてくれたまでだ。The teacher just answered the question. (Unnatural Japanese)
