Explanation
While similar to からする, which indicates something's value 'starts from (A)', からある expresses that something's quantity 'exists from (A)'. This grammar is used to emphasize a number or amount, implying that it is 'at least' a certain figure, often with a sense of surprise at how large it is. からある is formed by the particle から, meaning 'from', and the verb ある, meaning 'to exist'.
からある is attached directly after a number and a counter.
- あのマグロは重さが１００キロからあるそうだ。I heard that tuna weighs at least 100 kilograms.
- この歴史小説は１０００ページからあるので、読み終わるのに時間がかかる。This historical novel is no less than 1000 pages long, so it will take a while to finish reading.
- ここから次の駅までは２キロからある距離を歩かなければならない。You have to walk a distance of at least 2 kilometers from here to the next station.
からある is most commonly used when discussing measurements that do not typically change, such as weight, length, or height.
Caution
In line with the fundamental difference between いる and ある, you must use いる when the thing being counted is animate.
- この大学には学生が２万人からいる。There are over 20,000 students at this university.
Despite this, using からいる is quite uncommon in practice. The structure からの is far more frequently used to count people or animals.
- デモには５００人からの人々が参加した。More than 500 people participated in the demonstration.
