飽く is a classical and literary form of the modern verb 飽きる, which means 'to get tired of' or 'to have enough of'. When combined with the adverbial particle まで (until), it forms 飽くまで. While its literal sense is 'to the very end' or 'persistently', it is commonly used to mean 'strictly', 'just', or 'only'. This nuance comes from the idea of sticking to one thing relentlessly, without being swayed. Functioning as an adverb, 飽くまで is typically placed at the beginning of a sentence or clause. For additional stress, the adverbial particle も can be attached, but it is optional.
- 彼女はあくまでもアルバイトですから、そんなに仕事を任せないでください。She is just a part-timer, so please don't assign her so much work.
- これはあくまで目安なので、最終的な金額とは異なるかもしれません。This is only a rough estimate, so it may differ from the final amount.

Frequently, 飽くまで is employed in polite speech when a person is offering their personal view. Using it in this context softens the statement, signaling to the listener that the speaker acknowledges their perspective as 'just one opinion' among potentially many others.

This method of framing an opinion is frequently paired with conjunctions such as けど or が. This allows the speaker to gently buffer their statement before proceeding to offer a suggestion or a contrasting thought.
