Explanation
なくしては is a conditional pattern used to state that 'without (A), (B) is not possible'. It can also be expressed as なしには or なしでは with very similar meanings. This grammar is formed by combining なく (the conjunctive form of the い-Adjective ない), the conjunction particle して, which sets up the preceding word as a necessary condition, and the adverbial particle は.
Because the clause following なくしては is also in the negative, the structure creates a strong double negative. This emphasizes the idea that the absence of (A) guarantees the non-occurrence of (B). As a result, it carries a strong nuance that '(B) is absolutely impossible without (A)'.
なくしては is placed after a noun, or after a verb phrase that has been turned into a noun using こと.
- 皆さんのサポートなくしては、ここまで来られませんでした。I couldn't have made it this far without everyone's support.
- チームの協力なくしては、このプロジェクトは終わらなかっただろう。Without the team's cooperation, this project probably would not have been completed.
- 毎日練習することなくしては、ピアノは上手にならないよ。You won't get good at piano without practicing every day.
- お互いを信頼することなくしては、良い関係は築けない。A good relationship cannot be built without trusting each other.
As noted earlier, the forms なしには and なしでは are also common. They are created by attaching the particle combinations には or では to the noun 無し, which means 'without'. Among the three variations, なくしては carries the most formal tone.
- スマートフォンなしには、もはや一日も生活できない人が多い。Many people nowadays can't get through a single day without their smartphone.
- コーヒーなしでは、朝が始まらない！My morning just doesn't start without coffee!
In sentences using なくしては, the second clause (B) almost invariably describes a positive result, goal, or accomplishment that is unattainable if the condition in the first clause (A) is not met.
