~て止まない
Never cease to, Always, Sincerely, Greatly, From the bottom of one's heart
Structure
Explanation
~てやまない is a formal expression used to convey a deep and persistent feeling. It is formed by attaching `やまない` to the て-form of a verb. Its literal meaning, 'to not cease doing (something),' is used to express that an emotion is felt strongly and continuously. As such, it is often translated as 'to sincerely (feel),' 'deeply (feel),' or 'to feel from the bottom of one's heart.' This grammar is reserved for describing profound emotions.
- 私が尊敬してやまない先生が、来月で退職されるそうだ。It seems the teacher I deeply respect is retiring next month.
- 学生時代にもっと勉強しなかったことを、今でも後悔してやまない。To this day, I can't help but regret not studying more when I was a student.
- 卒業生の皆さんの成功を心から願ってやみません。I sincerely wish for the success of all the graduating students.
This pattern is frequently paired with verbs related to strong, personal feelings. Common examples include 願う 'to wish', 信じる 'to believe', 尊敬する 'to respect', 期待する 'to expect/hope for', 後悔する 'to regret', and 愛する 'to love'. It can be used to describe both positive and negative deep-seated emotions.
Caution
Because やまない highlights the enduring nature of a feeling, てやまない is not suitable for emotions that are fleeting or momentary, like a brief burst of anger or a passing feeling of disappointment.
- テストの点数が悪くて、がっかりしてやまない。I was deeply disappointed because my test score was bad. (Unnatural Japanese)
