Explanation
When appended to a noun, the suffix ぐるみ is used to indicate that the entirety of a group or entity (A) is involved. It can be translated as 'the whole (A)', 'including (A)', or '(A)-wide'. ぐるみ originates from the う-Verb 包む, which means 'to wrap up' or 'to envelop'.
Most commonly, ぐるみ is followed by the case marking particle で to indicate the state or group by which an action is performed. However, の may be used instead when ぐるみ modifies another noun.
- 村ぐるみで夏祭りの準備を始めた。The entire village began preparing for the summer festival.
- 学校ぐるみでボランティア活動に参加した。The whole school took part in the volunteer activities.
- あれは家族ぐるみの旅行だった。That was a trip with the entire family.
- このプロジェクトは会社ぐるみの協力が必要だ。This project requires company-wide cooperation.
ぐるみ is typically attached to nouns that represent a collective unit, where the subject of the sentence is just one component. This might refer to a single employee within a company, one family in a neighborhood, or any other part of a larger, clearly defined group.
Even so, the main nuance is always on the collective action or state of the group as a single entity, rather than on the actions of the individuals within it.
