Explanation
In casual conversation, ってば and ったら are used to forcefully state the speaker's point of view, especially when they feel they are not being listened to. These expressions often translate as 'I said (A)!' or 'I told you (A)!'. ってば is a shortened form of といえば, and ったら is a contraction of といったら. In this context, their function is very close to the English phrase 'Didn't I tell you (A)?!', particularly when said with annoyance or frustration.
Both ってば and ったら can be attached to various word types, but they must be preceded by だ when following nouns or な-Adjectives.
- もう寝るってば！テレビの音、もうちょっと小さくしてよ。I said I'm going to sleep! Can you please turn the TV volume down a bit?
- 熱いったら！だから触っちゃダメだって言ったのに。I told you it's hot! That's why I said not to touch it.
- 無理だってば！こんなにたくさんの荷物、一人で持てるわけないでしょう。I'm telling you, it's impossible! There's no way I can carry all this luggage by myself.
- だから、冗談だったら！そんなに真剣な顔しないでよ。Look, I said it was a joke! Don't look so serious.
Caution
When ってば and ったら follow a noun directly without だ, the meaning changes. This usage is typically aimed at a person (often someone the speaker knows well) and expresses a sense of fond exasperation or mild annoyance. It can be translated as 'oh (A)...' or 'that (A), honestly...'.
- 弟ってば、また私のゲームで遊んでる。My brother, I swear... He's playing my video games again.
- もう、お母さんったら、いつも心配しすぎなんだから。Oh, Mom. You always worry way too much.
