とばかりに
As if (to say), Seeming that
Structure
Noun +(だ)+ とばかり
Explanation
とばかり is a grammatical structure used to convey that an action is performed 'as if to say (A)' or 'with the appearance of (A)'. It is formed by the quotation particle と, which marks a thought or utterance, and the adverbial particle ばかり, which emphasizes that something is 'just like' a certain state. As a result, とばかり indicates that an action strongly implies (A), even if (A) is not literally happening or being said.
Because と acts as a quotative particle, とばかり can be used after many different words and phrases. The particle に is frequently attached to ばかり to connect the 'as if' clause to the action that follows it in the sentence.
- デパートがタイムセールを始めたので、客たちはこことばかりに目当ての商品に走っていった。When the department store started its timed sale, the shoppers rushed to their desired items as if this was their only chance.
- うちの猫は「やっと遊んでもらえる」とばかりに、おもちゃに向かって飛びかかった。My cat pounced on the toy as if to say, 'Finally, it's playtime!'
- 子供は「これが欲しい」とばかりに床に寝転んで泣き叫んだ。The child lay on the floor and wailed as if to say, 'I want this!'
とばかりに is a shortened version of the expression と言わんばかり, which means 'almost as if saying (A)'. This longer form is also used very often.
- 彼は早く行こうと言わんばかりに、足で地面をトントンとたたいた。He tapped his foot on the ground as if to say, 'Let's go already.'
- もう無理だと言わんばかりの大きなため息をついた。He let out a huge sigh, as if to say he couldn't take it anymore.
In this structure, 言わん is derived from the classical form 言わぬ, which uses the classical auxiliary verb ぬ to express negation.
Caution
Since とばかりに describes how an action appears to an observer, it is typically used for other people or things. It is generally not used for the speaker's own actions, unless the speaker is narrating their own experience from a detached, third-person viewpoint.
