Explanation
Much like とばかりに, the expression んばかりに is used to describe an action or state that appears to be on the very brink of becoming (A). It conveys the idea of 'as if to (A)' or 'looking like it might (A) at any moment'. This grammar point is believed to originate from a blend of ん (a shortened form of the classical auxiliary verb む, which indicated intention much like modern う/よう) and the adverbial particle ばかり (which emphasizes that something is exactly in a certain state). Consequently, んばかり highlights that a situation looks as though the volitional form of verb (A) is just about to occur.
To use んばかりに, attach it to the stem of a verb that precedes ない (the indeterminate form). The に particle then connects this phrase to the clause it modifies. When modifying a noun directly, の is used in place of に.
- 彼は喉が裂けんばかりに、大声で助けを求めた。He yelled for help at the top of his lungs, as if his throat would tear apart.
- 飼い犬は「お腹がすいた」とでも言わんばかりに、私の足にすり寄ってきた。My dog came and rubbed against my leg, as if to say, 'I'm hungry'.
- 息子の卒業式で、父はこぼれんばかりの笑顔を浮かべていた。At his son's graduation ceremony, the father wore a smile so wide it looked as if it was about to burst.
- ボランティアの皆さんの協力に、涙が出んばかりの感謝の気持ちでいっぱいだった。I was filled with a feeling of gratitude for the volunteers' help, so much so that I felt as if I was on the verge of tears.
Caution
There is some academic debate regarding the origin of the ん in this pattern when used with the indeterminate form of a verb. Some linguists argue it derives from む, the classical equivalent of the volitional う/よう, while others suggest it comes from ぬ, the classical negative equivalent of ない. Since its true etymology is uncertain, learners may find it useful to adopt whichever explanation makes the most sense for understanding the nuance in a given context.
