Explanation
The grammar pattern というところ is used to provide a rough estimate of a number, amount, or degree. It is formed by combining the particle と, the verb 言う (to say), and the noun ところ (place/point). It often carries the nuance of 'around (A)', 'something like (A)', or 'I'd say about (A)'. A more direct translation would be 'it's at the point where one would say (A)'.
This structure typically follows nouns or verbs, although it can sometimes be used with adjectives. As it is generally found at the conclusion of a sentence, というところ is frequently followed by だ or です to form a complete statement.
- 準備はどれくらい？ あと１時間あれば終わるというところだ。How are the preparations coming? With another hour, I'd say we'll be done.
- どのくらい大きいかというと、大人が二人入っても広いというところかな。You ask how big it is? I'd say it's spacious enough for two adults to fit inside.
- プロジェクトの進捗は、予定どおりというところだ。The project's progress is more or less on schedule.
- 普通は千円するけど、この店なら八百円というところです。Normally it's 1,000 yen, but at this shop, you're looking at about 800 yen.
Occasionally, the past-tense form といった is used in place of という. This substitution does not change the meaning of the phrase in any way.
- この中古車なら、値段は五十万円といったところですね。For a used car like this, the price would be somewhere around 500,000 yen.
- この本を読み終わるのに、三日といったところです。To finish reading this book, it'll take about three days.
Caution
というところ generally implies that the stated figure is a rough upper limit or a general approximation, not a starting point. For this reason, it can sound unnatural when used to express a minimum value, like 'at least'.
- この仕事を終わらせるには、少なくとも一週間というところです。To get this work done, I'd say it will take at least one week.
