It is widely believed that the ない in this expression is a contraction of ありはしない or its more colloquial version, ありゃしない. This phrase combines the verb ある with the case marking particle は and the negative helper verb しない. Therefore, a more direct interpretation would be something like, 'if you try to put (A) into words, there is just no way to do it'.
- あのレストランの汚さといったらありゃしない。二度と行きたくない。I can't even describe how filthy that restaurant was. I never want to go back.

Caution
Because this grammar emphasizes an extraordinary degree of something, い-Adjectives are frequently nominalized with the さ suffix to turn them into nouns that express that quality or state.
