Structure
[い]Adjective[ば]+ こそ + Phrase
[な]Adjective + であれば + こそ + Phrase
Noun + であれば + こそ + Phrase
Phrase (A) + であれば + こそ + Phrase(B)
Explanation
Functioning in a very similar manner to からこそ, ばこそ is a grammatical structure used to strongly emphasize that (A) is the one and only reason for (B). Its meaning is best translated as 'it is only because (A) that (B)' or 'specifically due to (A)'. This grammar point is a fusion of the conditional particle ば and the emphasizing particle こそ, with こそ working in a way that is similar to a sentence-final particle.
ばこそ can be attached to most word types, as long as they are first converted to their hypothetical form. However, when used with nouns or な-Adjectives, it will always take the form of であればこそ.
- あなたのことを愛していればこそ、厳しく言うのです。It's precisely because I love you that I'm being so strict.
- 苦しければこそ、人は成長できるのだ。It is only through suffering that a person can truly grow.
- 静かであればこそ、みんなが図書館で集中できる。Everyone can concentrate in the library precisely because it is quiet.
- 友達であればこそ、大変な時に助けてくれる。It is precisely because they are a friend that they will help you in times of trouble.
In many situations, the reason presented in (A) might not seem like a logical cause for the outcome in (B). In such situations, こそ is used to add the necessary emphasis and show the speaker's strong conviction.
Caution
ばこそ has a very formal and somewhat dated feel. In everyday conversation and writing, からこそ is almost always the more natural and common choice.
