に堪えない
Cannot bear to, Cannot stand to, Too much to, Cannot go on doing, Cannot tolerate
Structure
Adverb + に堪えない
Explanation
The phrase に堪えない expresses that one ‘cannot stand (doing something)’ or finds an action ‘unbearable’. It is formed by combining the case-marking particle に with 堪えない, the negative form of the る-Verb 堪える, which means ‘to endure’ or ‘to tolerate’.
When used in this way, に堪えない always follows a verb. This distinguishes it from a similar-sounding grammar pattern where に堪えない follows a noun to mean ‘extremely (A)’, which more literally translates to ‘so (A) that it's unbearable’.
- あの動物のドキュメンタリーは悲しすぎて、最後まで見るに堪えなかった。That animal documentary was so sad that I couldn't bear to watch it to the end.
- 彼の歌はあまりにも下手で、聞くに堪えない。His singing is so awful that it's unbearable to listen to.
- この物語は内容が残酷すぎて、読むに堪えない。The plot of this story is so cruel that I can't stand to read it.
While 堪える is the most common kanji used for this expression, other kanji with the same pronunciation and related meanings may appear. For example, 耐える ‘to withstand’ is sometimes used to emphasize the physical or mental capacity to endure something. In contrast, 絶える ‘to cease’, or ‘to die out’ is used when one cannot contain a powerful emotion. For 絶える, this is especially used in the case of strong feelings.
- 校長先生の話は退屈すぎて、これ以上聞き続けるに耐えない。The principal's speech is so boring that I cannot endure listening to it any longer.
- 皆さんが助けてくれたことに対して感謝に絶えない。I am overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone's help.
Caution
The positive form, に堪える, can also mean that something is ‘worthwhile’ or ‘deserves’ a certain action. This phrasing suggests that an item possesses enough quality to be considered for a particular purpose or audience, even if it wasn't its primary intention. It implies that something meets a standard of acceptability.
- このアニメは子供向けだが、大人の鑑賞に堪える作品だ。Although this anime is for children, it's a work that's worth watching for adults too.
- 何度も書き直して、ようやく提出するに堪える記事ができた。After rewriting it many times, I've finally produced an article that is good enough to submit!
