ただ〜のみ
Nothing but, Should, Have to, Only, All that remains,
Structure
(ただ) + [する]Verb + ある(2) + のみ + (だ(1))
(1) である
(2) する
Explanation
ただ~のみ is a grammatical structure used to express that ‘(A) is the only option left’, or ‘all one can do is (A)’. This phrase is formed by combining the adverb ただ, meaning ‘simply’ or ‘merely’, with the particle のみ, which means ‘only’ or ‘just’. While のみ has a similar function to だけ and ばかり, it is considered more formal and is often used in writing.
The action (A) is frequently a verb that expresses perseverance, waiting, or wishing. This grammar highlights a situation where all preparations have been made or all other avenues have been exhausted, and the only remaining course of action is to wait for the outcome or to continue moving forward.
- 準備は全て整った。ただ本番を待つのみだ。All the preparations are complete. All we can do now is wait for the actual performance.
- 道に迷ってしまった。ただ前に進むのみです。I've completely lost my way. There's nothing to do but press onward.
- 夢を叶えるためには、ただ努力あるのみだ。To make your dream a reality, there is no other way but to work hard.
When this expression is used with する-Verbs, the する part may sometimes be substituted with ある. This change in wording shifts the focus from the performance of the action to the existence of that action as the only choice. Using ある instead of する gives the phrase a more literary tone.
