との
That, To
Structure
[い]Adjective + との + Noun
[な]Adjective + (だ) + との + Noun
Noun + (だ) + との + Noun
Explanation
との is a compound particle that joins the quotative particle と with the possessive particle の. This structure first uses と to frame the preceding clause as a quote or statement. Then, の attaches this entire quote to the following noun, modifying it. In English, this is often best translated as ‘that’ or ‘saying that’.
Just like the quotative と by itself, との can follow most types of words. It may also appear after だ when the preceding word is a noun or a な-Adjective.
- 明日は台風が来るとの予報を聞いたので、今日のうちに買い物を済ませよう。I heard the forecast that a typhoon is coming tomorrow, so let's get the shopping done today.
- 料金が高すぎるとの意見が多く、見直しが必要です。We've received many opinions that the fees are too high, and a review is necessary.
- 田中さんから、会議に少し遅れるとの連絡がありました。There was a message from Tanaka-san saying that he will be a little late for the meeting.
- あの二人は付き合っているとの噂が広まっているが、本当かどうかは分からない。A rumor is spreading that those two are dating, but I don't know if it's true or not.
- 彼の案が一番だとの判断から、プロジェクトリーダーに選ばれました。Based on the judgment that his plan was the best, he was chosen as the project leader.
This grammar pattern presents the preceding clause as a piece of information. As such, it is almost always followed by a noun that signifies some form of communication, thought, or report. Common examples are 話 ‘story/talk’, 知らせ ‘notice’, 意見 ‘opinion’, 依頼 ‘request’, 判断 ‘judgment’, 指摘 ‘observation’, 報告 ‘report’, etc.
