Explanation
Similar to しかない, the grammar pattern より他ない is used after a verb to stress that there is only one course of action available. It is formed by combining the particle より ('than' or 'from'), the noun 他 ('other'), and the い-Adjective ない. A literal translation would be 'there is nothing besides (A)', but its primary function is to express the feeling that one cannot do anything except (A).
It can be translated into English as 'have no choice but to (A)', 'the only option is to (A)', or 'can only (A)'.
- 終電に乗り遅れてしまったので、家まで歩いて帰るよりほかはなかった。I missed the last train, so I had no choice but to walk home.
- パソコンが壊れてしまったので、新しいのを買うよりほかない。My computer broke, so I have no choice but to buy a new one.
Sometimes, the particles に, は, or the two combined as には can be inserted between 他 and ない. This addition doesn't alter the core meaning, but it serves to place greater emphasis on the fact that no other option exists.
- もう結果は決まったから、あとは待つよりほかにない。The results are already decided, so all we can do is wait.
- みんな忙しかったので、私がひとりでやるよりほかはなかった。Everyone was busy, so I had no choice but to do it by myself.
- 試験に合格するためには、毎日勉強するよりほかにはない。In order to pass the test, I have no other choice but to study every day.
