一応 ①
Just in case, Just to be sure
Structure
Explanation
As an adverb, 一応 can express the idea of performing an action (A) as a minimal precaution against a potential negative outcome (B). This specific meaning of 一応 is often translated as 'just in case (A)' or 'just to be sure (A)'.
- 料理は十分作ったつもりだけど、足りなくなるかもしれないから 一応パンも買っておこうか。I think I've made enough food, but we might run out, so maybe we should buy some bread too, just in case.
- ドアの鍵は閉めたと思うけど、心配だから 一応もう一回確かめてきて。I think I locked the door, but I'm worried, so please go check it one more time, just to be sure.
When used in this sense, 一応 implies that although the negative result (B) is unlikely, taking the precautionary step (A) is a sensible choice. This contrasts with another common meaning of 一応, which can be expressed as 'more or less' or 'for now'. In both cases, however, the word indicates that a minimum requirement has been met or that something is provisionally acceptable.
- 山田:「この説明、分かった?」佐藤:「はい、 一応理解できました。」Yamada: 'Did you get that explanation?' Sato: 'Yes, I understood it, more or less.'
- このパソコンは修理が必要ですが、 一応まだ使えます。This computer needs to be repaired, but it's usable for the time being.
