に他ならない
Nothing but, None other than, Simply
Structure
(1) にほかならぬ
Explanation
The grammar point に他ならない is attached to nouns to strongly assert that something is 'nothing other than (A)' or 'purely (A)'. It's used to pinpoint the exact reason or identity of something, leaving no room for other possibilities.
This pattern gives emphasis to a conclusion, reason, or cause that the speaker is presenting.
- 彼が試験に合格できたのは、彼の努力の結果に他ならない。The fact that he was able to pass the exam is nothing other than the result of his own hard work.
- 約束を何度も破るなんて、無責任に他ならない。Breaking a promise over and over again is nothing but irresponsible.
This phrase is formed from the noun 他, meaning 'other', and ならない, the negative form of the verb なる, 'to become'. Literally, it means 'it does not become other than...', underscoring that the subject is precisely (A) and cannot be interpreted as anything else.
Caution
A more formal, often written, variation of this grammar is に他ならぬ.
