Explanation
を除いて is a formal expression created by pairing the particle を with the て-form of the verb 除く, which means 'to exclude'. It typically follows a noun and conveys the idea of 'apart from (A), (B)', 'barring (A), (B)', or 'not including (A), (B)'.
Like many grammar patterns that come from verbs, the dictionary form can also be used to directly describe another noun.
- 田中さんを除いて、全員が会議に参加しました。Except for Tanaka-san, everyone attended the meeting.
- この店は水曜日を除いて、いつでも開いています。Except for Wednesdays, this shop is always open.
- 彼を除く全員がテストに合格した。Everyone except for him passed the test.
- この料理を除く全てのメニューに卵が入っています。All the menu items, excluding this dish, contain egg.
を除いて carries a more formal tone than its counterpart 以外 ('except for') and is often used in official documents, public notices, and similar written contexts.
