Explanation
A common set expression, よりしかたがない is formed using より, the noun 仕方 (meaning 'method' or 'way'), and the particles が and ない. When it follows a verb in its dictionary form, it expresses that there is 'no other option but to do (A)', or that an action '(A) is unavoidable'.
It is also common for the が to be left out between 仕方 and ない.
- パソコンが壊れてしまったので、新しいのを買うより仕方がない。My computer broke, so I have no choice but to buy a new one.
- 終電に乗り遅れたから、タクシーで帰るより仕方がない。Since I missed the last train, I have no choice but to go home by taxi.
- 急に雨が降ってきたので、イベントは中止にするより仕方ない。It suddenly started raining, so there's no choice but to cancel the event.
A closely related grammar point with a very similar translation is より他にない. The main distinction is its focus on there being no 'other' course of action, as opposed to no 'method'. To form this pattern, the noun 他 ('other') and the particle に are used in place of 仕方 and が.
Just like with 仕方が, the particle に is frequently omitted after 他.
- パスポートを忘れてしまった。家に戻るより他にない。I've forgotten my passport. There's no other choice but to go back home.
- 間違ったデータを送ってしまったので、すぐに電話で訂正するより他にない。I sent the wrong data, so I have no other choice but to call and correct it immediately.
- ここまで探しても見つからないのなら、もうあきらめるより他ない。If I can't find it after searching this much, I have no other choice but to give up.
Both よりしかたがない and よりほかにない are used to convey a strong sense that a certain action is the only one possible. They highlight that, under the current circumstances, the stated action is simply unavoidable or must be accepted as the only path forward.
