Explanation
ないことには～ない is a two-part grammar pattern used to state a necessary condition. It conveys that 'if (A) is not done or is not the case, then (B) cannot happen or be achieved'. This structure is formed by combining ない, こと, に, and は, with the second part of the sentence also ending in a negative form. Literally, it expresses that 'in circumstances where (A) is not a fact, (B) will also not be a fact'.
This grammar pattern can be used with the ない-form of verbs and い-adjectives, or with nouns that are followed by でない.
- 切符を買わないことには、電車に乗れない。You can't get on the train unless you buy a ticket.
- ケーキは、甘くないことには美味しくない。A cake isn't delicious unless it's sweet.
- 学生でないことには、この割引は使えない。You can't use this discount unless you are a student.
- 実際に見ないことには、信じられません。Unless you see it for yourself, it's impossible to believe.
In sentences using ないことには～ない, the first clause (A) establishes the essential prerequisite that must be met for the second clause (B) to become possible.
Caution
On some occasions, ないことには may appear in a sentence that does not conclude with a negative form. In such instances, ないことには implies that the absence of (A) will result in a negative or undesirable outcome for (B). This is often translated as 'without (A), (B) will unfortunately...', and expressions of regret or unfavorable results like しまう often follow.
- ルールを理解していないことには、ゲームに負けてしまうかもしれない。Unfortunately, you might lose the game if you don't understand the rules.
- 地図を確かめないことには、道に迷ってしまうだろう。Without checking the map, we'll probably end up getting lost.
