ないではいられない
Cannot help doing something, Cannot resist doing something
Structure
(1) じゃ
Explanation
To convey that an action is unavoidable or that an urge is irresistible, Japanese uses the expression ないではいられない. This grammar pattern is constructed by taking the negative form of a verb and attaching で, は, and the negative potential form of the る-Verb 居る, 'to be'. In essence, it means 'cannot remain in a state of not doing (A)'.
ないではいられない is chiefly used to express the speaker's inability to stop themselves from doing something they have a strong desire to do. It can also carry the nuance that they will end up doing the action, even while being aware that they probably should not.
- 可愛い猫を見ると、触らないではいられなくなる。When I see a cute cat, I can't stop myself from petting it.
- 疲れていると、コーヒーを飲まないではいられないんだ。When I'm tired, I just have to drink coffee.
- あのコメディー映画を観ると、いつも大声で笑わないではいられない。Whenever I watch that comedy movie, I can't help but laugh out loud.
ないではいられない can also emphasize that a certain emotion, feeling, or reaction is impossible to suppress in a given situation (A). The resulting action (B) is a natural and uncontrollable consequence.
- その悲しい物語を読んだら、涙を流さないではいられなかった。After reading that sad story, I couldn't help but shed tears. (Emotion)
- 迷子の子供を見かけたら、声をかけないではいられない。If I see a lost child, I can't resist speaking to them. (Feeling)
- 彼にひどいことを言われて、一言言い返さないではいられなかった。When he said something awful to me, I couldn't help but talk back. (Reaction)
