Explanation
Derived from the noun 内 (meaning 'inside' or 'among'), the grammar pattern のうち follows a noun or number to express 'among (A)', much like の中. While のうち is frequently paired with で, it can also be followed by の, particularly when connecting to another quantity.
- 私の家族のうちで、母が一番料理が上手です。Among my family members, my mom is the best cook.
- この三人のうちで誰が一番背が高いですか。Among these three people, who is the tallest?
- 日本の食べ物のうちで、何が一番おいしいと思いますか。Among all Japanese foods, what do you think is the most delicious?
- この本棚にある漫画、５０冊のうちの半分はもう読んだ。Of the 50 manga on this bookshelf, I have already read half of them.
The noun used with の内 can indicate a scope or boundary, so its use isn't restricted to just numbers. Similar to の中, it can also be followed by the particle から instead of で.
- これらの色すべてのうちから、お好きなものを一つ選んでください。Please choose one you like from out of all these colors.
- この箱に入っているボール１０個のうちから、３個取り出してください。Please take three balls out from the ten that are in this box.
When expressing 'amongst', のうち is used much less frequently than のなか, making のなか the more common and natural choice in spoken Japanese. Furthermore, despite its origin from the kanji 内, it is almost always written in hiragana.
