Explanation
In contrast to the standard conditional ば form, ねば utilizes the classical auxiliary verb ず, specifically its ね form. Despite this classical origin, its meaning is identical to the modern expression なければ, meaning 'if not (A)'. ねば attaches to verbs in the same manner as ない and is then followed by ならない, the negative form of なる 'to become'.
Just like なければならない, the structure ねばならない translates to 'must do (A)' or 'have to do (A)'. It is essentially a double negative construction that literally means 'if (A) is not done, it will not do'. This is a formal and somewhat literary expression, often encountered in writing.
- 明日までにこの本を返さねばならない。I have to return this book by tomorrow.
- 校則だから、制服を着ねばならない。Because it's a school rule, I must wear my uniform.
Since ね originates from the literary auxiliary verb ず, the verb する conjugates to せねば. This follows the same classical conjugation pattern seen in other grammar points where it becomes せず.
- 旅行の前に、準備をせねばならない。I must get everything ready before the trip.
- 試験に合格したいなら、ちゃんと勉強をせねばならない。If you want to pass the exam, you have to study properly.
Caution
At times, ならない may be substituted with ならぬ. This carries the exact same meaning and simply employs the ぬ attributive form of the same auxiliary verb, ず.
- 先生と約束したので、この研究は必ず完成せねばならぬ。I made a promise to my professor, so I must complete this research no matter what.
While the meaning does not change, the use of ぬ gives the entire phrase an even more archaic feel.
Fun-fact
Similar to other 'must' expressions formed with double negatives, the latter half of ねばならない can sometimes be dropped, leaving only ねば or せねば. This is comparable to how ないと is often used colloquially without a concluding いけない or だめ.
- ああ、もうお昼だ。仕事に行かねば。Oh, it's already noon. I've got to get to work.
- 部屋が汚いな。そろそろ掃除せねば。My room is a mess. I have to clean it soon.
