結果
As a result of
Structure
Noun + の + 結果 + Phrase
Explanation
The Japanese noun 結果, meaning 'result', is used to connect a cause with its outcome. It typically follows a verb in its past tense form or a noun with の. This pattern expresses the idea of 'as a consequence of (A), (B) happened', showing that (A) directly led to the final situation (B).
- 毎日お菓子ばかり食べていた結果、虫歯になってしまった。As a result of eating nothing but sweets every day, I ended up with a cavity.
- 一生懸命勉強した結果、試験に合格した。As a result of studying with all my might, I passed the exam.
- 会議の結果、新しいプロジェクトを始めることになった。As a result of the meeting, it was decided that we will start a new project.
- 検査の結果、彼が健康であることがわかった。As a result of the check-up, we found out that he is in good health.
Caution
While both 結果 and the similar grammar point あげく indicate an outcome, there is a key difference in nuance. 結果 is neutral and can be used for both good and bad outcomes. In contrast, あげく is almost always used to describe a negative or undesirable end.
- 練習を重ねた結果、ピアノがとても上手になった。As a result of practicing over and over, I got very good at playing the piano.
- いろいろ悩んだ挙句、会社を辞めてしまった。After agonizing over it for a long time, I ended up quitting my job.
