というものだ is a declarative expression used to state what the speaker believes is the fundamental nature or essence of something, based on common sense or social norms. It can be translated as 'that's just what (A) is' or 'it is the nature of (A) to be...'. The pattern highlights the speaker's conviction that their statement reflects a general truth about (A), drawn from objective observation.
This expression is formed by combining the particle という, the noun 物 (which here means 'essence' or 'nature'), and the copula だ. It typically appears at the conclusion of a sentence where the speaker is defining a concept or making a firm judgment.
- いつも子供のことを一番に考えるのが親というものだ。Always putting your children first is just what a parent does.
- 親切にされたら、お礼をする。それが礼儀というものだ。When someone is kind to you, you thank them. That's simply good manners.
- たくさん失敗して成長していく。それが若さというものだ。Making lots of mistakes and growing from them. That's the essence of youth.
Due to its assertive and conclusive tone, this grammar structure can sometimes be used when making a critical point. Whether it carries a negative nuance or not depends entirely on the surrounding situation.
Caution
In informal speech, という can be contracted to って, creating the more casual version ってものだ, which carries the exact same meaning.
- 困った時はすぐに駆けつける。それが親友ってものだ！Rushing to help when they're in trouble. That's what it means to be a best friend!
