からすると
Judging from, Considering
Structure
Noun + からすれば
Explanation
からすると is an expression formed from the particle から ('from'), the verb する ('to do'), and the conditional markers と or ば. It can be translated as 'judging by (A), (B)' or 'based on (A), (B)'. In this context, する works much like the English phrase 'judging by', simply showing that (A) is the foundation for the speaker's subsequent conclusion.
からすると or からすれば is attached to a noun. The clause that follows will convey the speaker's opinion or inference drawn from that noun.
- あの人の服装からすると、きっとお金持ちでしょう?Judging from their clothes, they must be rich, right?
- この変な音からすると、洗濯機が故障したに違いない。Based on this strange noise, the washing machine must be broken.
- 猫ずきな僕からすれば、あれはかわいい猫ではない。From my point of view as a cat lover, that is not a cute cat.
- あの空の様子からすると、午後は雨になるようだ。Judging by the look of the sky, it seems like it's going to rain this afternoon.
Fun-fact
In many instances where する is used with a conditional form such as と, ば, or たら, its role is to establish the first idea as a given, from which the speaker then develops their main point.
