からして
Even..., Judging from, Based on
Structure
Explanation
からして is formed by combining the particle から, meaning 'from', with して, the て-form of the verb する. It is used when a speaker makes a judgment about a situation (B) based on a single, often prominent, piece of evidence (A). This conveys a sense of 'judging from (A)' or 'going by (A)'. It suggests that (A) alone is a sufficient basis for forming an opinion, essentially meaning 'starting from (A), one can conclude (B)'.
からして immediately follows the noun that serves as the basis for the speaker's judgment.
- あの人の態度からして、きっといい人ではないだろう。Judging from that person's attitude, they're probably not a very nice person.
- この映画はタイトルからして、絶対に面白いに違いない。Judging by the title, this movie has to be interesting.
- この料理は匂いからしておいしそうだ。Going by the smell, this dish seems delicious.
Because からして is based on limited information, the speaker is not stating a confirmed fact but rather making an inference. The judgment is based solely on what is apparent. This often carries the nuance that 'if even this one small thing (A) is a certain way, then the whole picture (B) must be too'.
