Explanation
かのようだ is a grammatical pattern used to describe a situation that seems to be (A), although the speaker knows it isn't literally true. It is typically translated as 'as if (A)' or 'just like (A)'. This expression is formed from the question particle か, the particle の, and the auxiliary verb 様だ, which means 'looks like' or 'seems'. The inclusion of か introduces a sense of doubt or unreality, giving it the nuance of 'it is almost as though (A) were true'.
かのようだ can be attached to the plain form of verbs and い-Adjectives. When used with な-Adjectives or nouns, である must be placed before it.
- あのロボットはすごく人間らしい。まるで心を持っているかのようだ。That robot is so human-like. It's just as if it has a heart.
- なんだこの静寂は。まるで世界に私しかいないかのようだ。What is this silence? It's as if I'm the only person in the world.
- 彼は、大変な事故に遭ったのに、平気であるかのようだ。He acts as if he's completely fine, even though he was in a terrible accident.
- あの子はまだ五歳なのに、まるで大人であるかのようだ。That child is only five, but it's as if she's an adult.
When this structure is used to modify a verb that follows it, かのように is used. When it modifies a noun, かのような is used instead.
- 彼は何もかも見たかのように事件のことを話した。He talked about the incident as if he had seen everything.
- 空には、まるで夢の中で見たかのような景色が広がっていた。A scene spread across the sky, just as if it were from a dream.
This grammatical structure is frequently paired with adverbs like まるで to underscore the metaphorical nature of the comparison. Adding まるで is similar to how 'just' is used in English to intensify the phrase 'as if', changing it to 'just as if'.
