Structure
[い]Adjective + 傾向
[な]Adjective + な + 傾向
Noun + の + 傾向
(1) Verb[た]
Explanation
傾向がある is a somewhat formal expression used to point out that a particular 'trend' or 'tendency' exists. It is formed by combining the noun 傾向, meaning 'tendency,' with the verb がある, 'to have/there is.' As such, its literal meaning closely mirrors its English equivalent.
Since 傾向 functions as a noun, this grammar pattern can follow verbs, い-Adjectives, な-Adjectives (with な), and other nouns (with の).
- ストレスがたまると、普段より多く食べてしまう傾向がある。When I'm stressed, I tend to eat more than usual.
- 若い人は新しいテクノロジーに詳しい傾向がある。Younger people tend to be knowledgeable about new technology.
- このメーカーの製品は丈夫な傾向がある。Products from this manufacturer have a tendency to be durable.
- 最近の食生活は、健康志向の傾向がある。Recent dietary habits show a trend toward being more health-conscious.
While がある is the most common verb used with 傾向, it is not the only option. The verb が見られる ('a trend can be seen' or 'is observable') is also frequently used to express a similar idea.
- 冬場は、インフルエンザにかかる人が増加する傾向が見られる。During the winter, there's a noticeable trend of more people catching the flu.
It's important to remember that 傾向がある is neutral and can be used to describe trends that are considered either positive or negative in nature.
Caution
傾向がある is generally used for unchanging characteristics or general behaviors. In contrast, 傾向にある places more emphasis on being in the middle of an ongoing process or a developing situation, like a growing trend.
- 現在、円安は加速の傾向にある。Currently, the yen's depreciation is on an accelerating trend. (Ongoing trend)
- この地域の人口は減少する傾向にあるようだ。It seems the population of this area is on a downward trend. (Statistics)
