The adverb 精々 is used to indicate the absolute limit of something, meaning 'at the very most' or 'at best'. It implies that a certain quantity, level, or outcome cannot be surpassed because it has already reached a practical or perceived upper boundary. This often carries the nuance of 'no more than (A)', particularly in situations where the speaker is expressing a low expectation or highlighting a limitation.
Because 精々 is an adverb, it is usually placed immediately before the quantity or state that is being described as the maximum, which is frequently at the start of a sentence or clause.
- この古いテレビは、せいぜい二千円ぐらいで売れるだろう。This old TV would probably sell for 2,000 yen at most.
- せいぜい十分ぐらいしか待てませんよ。I can only wait for about ten minutes, at the very most.
- この試験で私が取れるのはせいぜい五十点くらいでしょう。The most I'll be able to get on this test is probably around 50 points, at best.
- 足が痛いから、歩けても精々五百メートルでしょう。My leg hurts, so even if I can walk, it'll only be 500 meters at the most.
Fun-fact
It is believed that 精々 originated from the older term 精誠, which meant 'to give one's entire heart and soul' or 'to act with utmost sincerity'. In contemporary Japanese, 精々 has retained this idea of 'stretching something to its absolute limit'. However, rather than referring to 'sincerity', it now applies to exhausting one's 'physical strength', 'mental energy', or 'ability to estimate' in relation to a given situation.
