何より
Be glad, Be relieved, Most, Best, Above all else, More than anything
Structure
何より + の + Noun
Explanation
The expression 何より, and its slightly stronger form 何よりも, is used to state that something is 'the most important thing', or to convey feelings of 'happiness' or 'relief'. Structurally, it combines the pronoun 何 (what) with the comparative particle より (than), literally meaning 'more than what/anything'. 何より is often used to highlight a positive aspect or outcome, especially when the overall circumstances could have been less favorable.
Grammatically, 何より and 何よりも typically function as adverbs. This means they can appear at the start of a sentence or immediately before the word they are modifying. In some cases, they can also precede a noun when connected with the particle の.
- 何より嬉しいのは、みんなが無事だったことです。Above all else, I'm just happy that everyone is safe.
- 君が元気そうで何よりだ。I'm so relieved to see that you're doing well.
- 何よりも大事なのは、家族との時間です。Nothing is more important than spending time with family.
- 彼からの手紙が何よりの宝物です。The letter from him is my most cherished possession.
As is common with the particle も, its addition here simply serves to add a small amount of emphasis, without changing the core meaning of the phrase.
