か何か
Or something, Or something like that
Structure
Explanation
か何か is a Japanese grammar structure used to suggest or identify something when you are not completely certain. Composed of the particle か, the pronoun 何 ('what'), and another か, its meaning is very close to the English phrases 'or something' and 'or something of that sort', implying that the preceding noun is just one possibility among others.
か何か is placed immediately after the noun for which the speaker wants to express a degree of uncertainty.
- ちょっと頭が痛いんです。薬か何かありませんか?I have a bit of a headache. Do you have any medicine or something?
- あのう、ハンカチか何かを落としましたよ。Excuse me, you dropped a handkerchief or something.
か何か is also frequently used when making an offer or asking a question. It is used in situations where the speaker is suggesting one option (A), but implies that other similar options are also available and acceptable. The noun (A) simply provides a general idea of what is being offered or asked about.
- 暇ですね。映画か何かを見ましょうか。I'm bored. Should we watch a movie or something?
- ケーキか何か食べますか?Would you like some cake or something?
