に過ぎない
No more than, Just, Merely
Structure
[い]Adjective +(だけ)にすぎない
[な]Adjective +(なだけ)にすぎない
Noun +(だけ)にすぎない
Explanation
The Japanese grammar pattern にすぎない is used to express that something is 'nothing more than (A)' or 'simply (A)'. It's formed by combining に with the negative form of the verb 過ぎる ('to go beyond' or 'to surpass'). This origin gives it a literal sense of 'does not exceed (A)', which closely matches its common English translations.
While にすぎない carries a somewhat formal nuance, it is still frequently encountered in everyday conversation. It can attach to verbs (in their plain forms), い-adjectives, な-adjectives, and nouns.
- 彼は冗談を言ったにすぎないから、そんなに怒らないでください。He was just telling a joke, so please don't be so angry.
- いくら高い道具を使っても、使い方が悪ければ、お金を捨てているにすぎない。No matter how expensive the tools you use, if you don't know how to use them properly, you're simply throwing your money away.
- このラーメンは辛いだけにすぎない。This ramen is nothing more than spicy.
- そのホテルは有名なだけにすぎない。That hotel is nothing more than famous.
- 山田くん、きみはまだ初心者にすぎない。Yamada-kun, you're still just a beginner.
To add extra emphasis, にすぎない is frequently used alongside words like ただ ('simply') or だけ ('only'). When using だけ, it is placed directly before にすぎない. Remember that when connecting to a な-adjective, な must be included before だけ.
- このゲームはただ難しいだけにすぎない。This game is just plain difficult.
- その話はただ複雑なだけにすぎない。That story is nothing more than complicated.
Fun-fact
You might sometimes see にすぎない as part of an idiomatic expression. A common example is 氷山の一角にすぎない, which translates to 'it's just the tip of the iceberg'.
- あの事件は氷山の一角にすぎないと言われている。It is said that that incident is merely the tip of the iceberg.
