ばいい
Can, Should, It'd be good if
Structure
Explanation
Unlike ばよかった, which expresses regret over something that has already happened, ばいい conveys the speaker's desire for a certain outcome regarding something in the future. It generally translates to 'It'd be good if (A)'.
This grammar is formed by taking the conditional ば-form of a verb, which is made by changing the final 'u' sound to an 'e' sound, and adding the conjunction particle ば. Then, the い-Adjective いい is attached.
- どのプレゼントを買えばいいか悩んでいる。I'm trying to decide which present would be good to buy.
- 間に合えばいいけど、間に合うか分からない。It would be great if I make it on time, but I don't know if I will.
While its literal meaning is 'it is good if (A)', this structure is also frequently used to offer a gentle suggestion. In these cases, it has a nuance similar to 'you should (A)' and is considered a soft way of giving advice.
- 分からないなら、先生に聞けばいいんじゃない?If you don't understand, shouldn't you just ask the teacher?
- 風邪をひいたなら、薬を飲めばいい。If you've caught a cold, you should just take some medicine.
Caution
ばいい may also be used to express a wish for something the speaker believes is unlikely or impossible. It is frequently followed by のに to create the nuance of 'it would be ideal if (A), but...'. This indicates the speaker recognizes that (A) would be good, but knows it probably won't happen for some reason.
- 日本語がもっと上手になればいいのに、なかなか上手にならない。It would be good if my Japanese got better, but it's not improving much.
- 寒いならコートを着ればいいのに。Even though you should just wear a coat if you're cold… (Why don't you)
- 謝ればいいのに、彼は頑固だから謝らない。He should just apologize, but because he is stubborn, he won't.
