内に
While, During
Structure
[い]Adjective + うちに
[な]Adjective + な + うちに
Noun + の + うちに
Explanation
The word うち, which can be written with the kanji 内 or 裡, combines with the case marking particle に to describe a window of time or a certain condition. Within this window, another action or change takes place. Frequently, this implies that it is the 'ideal' or 'best' time for that second event to happen. Common English translations for うちに include 'while' or 'before'.
うちに attaches to the dictionary form or ている form of a verb. It can also follow い-Adjectives in their plain form, nouns which are connected with の, and な-Adjectives which are followed by な.
- 日本に住むうちに、だんだんと地震に慣れてくる。As you live in Japan, you gradually get used to earthquakes.
- 暖かいうちに公園を散歩しよう。Let's take a walk in the park while it's warm.
- 通りがまだ静かなうちに、店に行きましょう。Let's go to the store while the street is still quiet.
- 学生のうちに、できるだけたくさん勉強しておきなさい。You should study as much as you can while you're a student.
In contrast to 間に, うちに indicates that an event takes place at some unspecified point 'during' a period or state (A). It does not specify exactly when the second event (B) happens within that timeframe.
- 映画を見ている間に寝てしまったので、話の最後が分からない。I fell asleep while watching the movie, so I don't know how it ends. (During the entire process of watching)
- 映画を見ているうちに寝てしまったので、話の最後が分からない。I fell asleep while watching the movie, so I don't know how it ends. (At some point while watching)
Fun Fact
The kanji 裡 literally means the inside lining of an object, or the space contained within. This visual can help you remember the 'non-specific' nature of うち, as it refers to something happening anywhere within that enclosed period of time.
