Structure
Explanation
すると is formed from the verb する and the conjunction particle と. It is widely seen as a contraction of そうすると, expressing the meaning 'after (A) happens, (B) occurs as a result', or 'so then (B)'. Typically placed at the start of a sentence, すると links an action or situation in the prior sentence to a new development that follows it.
When used independently to connect sentences, すると functions as a conjunction.
- 箱を開けた。すると、中からかわいい猫が飛び出してきた。I opened the box. And just then, a cute cat jumped out from inside.
- バス停でバスを待っていた。すると、突然雨が降り始めた。I was waiting for the bus at the bus stop. All of a sudden, it started to rain.
Caution
The outcome introduced by すると is typically one of two types: either an event that is outside of the speaker's control, or a logical deduction the speaker is making based on the information just given, often to seek confirmation.
- そのボタンを押した。すると、大きな音が鳴り響いた。I pushed that button. As soon as I did, a loud sound echoed all around.
- 日本語がとても上手ですね。すると、日本に長く住んでいたんですか。Your Japanese is excellent. In that case, does that mean you lived in Japan for a long time?
When すると is used to make a deduction from what someone else has said, it can often be translated as 'so, that means (A)', or 'in that case, (A)'.

ボタンを押した。すると、隠し扉が開いた。
I pushed the button. And then, a hidden door opened.
プレゼントの箱を開けた。すると、中から子猫が飛び出してきた。
I opened the present box. Upon doing so, a kitten jumped out from inside.
急に空が暗くなった。すると、大粒の雨が降り出した。
Suddenly the sky turned dark. And just then, large drops of rain began to fall.
冗談を言ってみた。すると、みんながどっと笑った。
I tried telling a joke. And then, everyone burst out laughing.
A：「うちの子は小学３年生なんです。」
B：「すると、８歳か９歳ぐらいですね。」
A: 'My child is in the third grade.'
B: 'In that case, they're around eight or nine years old, right?'
毎日３時間勉強した。すると、試験に合格することができた。
I studied for three hours every day. As a result, I was able to pass the exam.
夜中にふと鏡を見た。すると、後ろに誰か立っていた。
I glanced in the mirror in the middle of the night. And then I saw someone standing behind me.
おじいさんは庭に種を植えました。すると、次の日には天まで届く大木になっていました。
The old man planted a seed in his garden. And then, the next day it had grown into a giant tree that reached the heavens.
彼女の新しい髪型をほめた。すると、彼女は顔を赤らめた。
I complimented her on her new hairstyle. At that, she blushed.
ドアのベルを鳴らした。すると、見知らぬ女性が出てきた。
I rang the doorbell. And then, a woman I didn't know answered.
朝、カーテンを開けてみた。すると、外は雪で真っ白だった。
In the morning, I tried opening the curtains. And when I did, the outside was pure white with snow.
信号が青に変わった。すると、車が一斉に動き出した。
The traffic light turned green. Right after that, the cars all started moving at once.
