事はない
There is no need to, Never happens
Structure
Explanation
The phrase ことはない serves two main functions in Japanese. It can express that 'it is not necessary to do (A)', or that '(A) is something that never occurs'. The (A) in this pattern will always be a verb that comes right before こと. ことはない is frequently used to comfort someone by telling them that they don't have to worry about something.
Grammatically, the adverbial particle は marks the preceding action (A) as the topic of discussion. Then, the 形容詞 ない denies the existence of that action as a possibility or reality. This creates a literal sense of 'The thing (A) does not exist'.
- そんなに謝ることはないよ。誰でも間違うことはあるから。You don't have to apologize so much. Everyone makes mistakes.
- 彼は嘘をつくことはない。いつも正直な人だから。He would never tell a lie. He's a very honest person.
Caution
This pattern is quite distinct from たことがない, which describes a specific experience that one has not had. Unlike the case marking particle が, the particle は treats the entire verb phrase as a topic, and its use with the non-past verb form emphasizes that the action simply does not happen. Because of this, ことはない can carry a strong nuance that (A) is out of the question or inconceivable.
- これまで授業に遅れたことがない。I have never been late to class before.
- まだ時間はあるから、そんなに急ぐことはないよ。We still have time, so there is no need to hurry like that.
