Explanation
In Japanese, と同時に is a common way to indicate that multiple events are happening concurrently. This expression is formed by combining the listing particle と, the noun 同時, which means 'the same time', and the case marking particle に, which marks a point in time.
と同時に can be translated as 'at the same time as (A)', 'the moment (A) happens', or simply 'as well as (A)'. Although the event preceding と同時に is often the main trigger or action, the subsequent events are treated with equal significance.
- チャイムが鳴ったと同時に、授業が始まった。The moment the chime rang, class began.
- その映画は感動的であると同時に、多くの社会問題を描いている。That movie is moving, and at the same time, it depicts many social issues.
- 彼女は母親であると同時に会社の社長でもある。She is a mother and also the president of a company.
It's common to omit である when connecting nouns and な-Adjectives with this structure.
- この店はカフェと同時に本屋でもある。This shop is a cafe, and at the same time, it's also a bookstore.
Although と同時に literally means 'at the same time', it is frequently used to list various roles or characteristics of a person or object. In these cases, it takes on the meaning of 'as well as', while still retaining its original nuance of simultaneity.
- コーヒーと同時にケーキも注文した。I ordered cake along with my coffee.
- 財布と同時に定期券も落としてしまった。I ended up dropping my wallet as well as my train pass.
