Explanation
As seen in the 訳だ grammar point, わけ is a noun that expresses a logical conclusion or reason, much like 'it makes sense that...' or 'so...' in English. When this conclusion is negated, we get わけではない. This structure is formed by combining わけ with ではない, which itself is composed of the auxiliary verb だ, the adverbial particle は, and the negative い-Adjective ない.
わけではない can be translated as 'it's not that (A)' or 'it doesn't mean that (A)'. However, translations like 'it's not necessarily the case that (A)' often better capture the subtle nuance of denying a logical conclusion rather than just stating a simple fact. This grammar pattern can follow any phrase, provided the word immediately preceding わけ is in its attributive form (the form used to modify nouns).
- 学生だからといって、いつも勉強しているわけではないです。It doesn't mean that he studies all the time just because he is a student.
- このケーキは美味しいわけではないけど、まずくもない。It's not necessarily that this cake is delicious, but it isn't bad either.
- この食べ物が嫌いなわけではない。ただアレルギーなだけだ。It's not that I dislike this food; I'm just allergic to it.
- 病気のわけではないけど、今日は元気がない。It's not that I'm sick, but I just don't feel energetic today.
In more casual speech, では is frequently shortened to じゃ.
- あのレストランは人気があるけど、料理がすごくおいしいわけじゃない。That restaurant is popular, but it's not as if the food is incredible.
- 行きたくないって言っているわけじゃない。I'm not saying that I don't want to go. (It's just that I'm a bit busy at the moment)
Fun Fact
Both わけだ and わけではない carry a nuance of logical reasoning, similar to how 'so' can be used in English to mean 'therefore' or 'it makes sense that'. Conversely, as will be covered in the わけがない grammar point, わけ can also carry a strong emotional emphasis, like in the English phrase 'There's NO WAY that (A)!'.
- 忙しいというわけではない。It's not that I'm busy. (I just don't feel like going)
- 忙しいというわけがない。There's no way I'm busy. (I'm completely free)
