(1) さぁ、さあ、さー
Explanation
さ is a 感動詞 (interjection) in Japanese with three principal functions. They are listed below:
誘い、促し - To suggest, prompt, or call attention to something.
驚き、当惑し - To show surprise, confusion, or being taken aback.
話の流れを抑える - To manage or regulate the direction of a conversation.
This lesson will concentrate on one particular aspect of the first function (calling attention). Contrary to other ways さ can be used to call attention (see this grammar point), this usage of さ is found exclusively at the sentence's conclusion. In this context, さ carries a meaning very similar to よ, but it adds a subtle nuance of strong conviction about the statement being made.
- 先生が明日、テストがあるってさ。The teacher just announced we have a test tomorrow. (The added confidence gives the nuance of 'can you believe it!')
- 駅の前の新しいパン屋、来週オープンするんだってさ！I heard that new bakery in front of the station is opening next week!
- こんなの簡単さ！すぐに勝てるよ！This is a piece of cake! I'll win in no time!
Caution
This use of さ is predominantly masculine, and its nuance can shift based on the speaker's intonation. Nevertheless, it almost always conveys the speaker's conviction that 'what I'm saying is a fact', whether that conviction is expressed with anger, for informational purposes, or in a lighthearted manner.
- あのさ...Listen… (Used to get someone's attention before saying something serious)
- お母さん、今日は帰りが遅いってさ。晩ご飯、どうする？何か作る？Mom said she'll be home late today. What should we do for dinner? Should we make something?
- その問題ぐらい、俺でも解けるさ。たぶんね。Even I could solve a problem like that. Well, probably.
While it is possible for women to use さ as a sentence-ending particle, わよ is typically more prevalent in female speech.

「心配するな。彼はきっと来るさ。」
'Don't worry. He'll definitely come.' (emphasis; softer than よ）
Ａ：「プレゼンで失敗しちゃった…。」
Ｂ：「気にするなさ。だれにでもあることさ。」
A: 'I messed up my presentation...'
B: 'Don't worry about it. It happens to everyone.' (emphasis; softer than よ）
「大丈夫。次があるさ。」
'It's alright. There will be a next time.' (emphasis; softer than よ）
「田中さん、会社を辞めるんだってさ。」
'They say Mr. Tanaka is quitting the company.' (emphasis; softer than よ）
Ａ：「テストに落ちたって本当？」
Ｂ：「まさか、そんなわけないさ。」
A: 'Is it true that you failed the test?'
B: 'No way! Of course not.' (emphasis; softer than よ）
「もし道に迷っても、誰かに聞けばいいさ。」
'Even if I get lost, I can just ask someone.' (emphasis; softer than よ）
「彼があんなに怒るなんて、よっぽどのことがあったのさ。」
'For him to get that angry, something pretty serious must have happened.' (emphasis; softer than よ）
「今から始めても、十分間に合うさ。」
'Even if we start now, we'll make it in plenty of time.' (emphasis; softer than よ）

A: 'It's impossible. Let's just give up.'
