Explanation
そこで (which can be written in kanji as 其処で, though this is uncommon) is formed from the word そこ 'there' and the case marking particle で. It is usually translated as 'so', 'therefore', or 'for that reason'. While it literally means 'at that point/place', the 'place' it refers to is typically a situation or circumstance. In this way, its function is quite similar to 'so' or 'therefore' in English.
Typically, the preceding sentence will describe a particular state of affairs, and そこで is then used to introduce the action that was or will be taken in response to it.
- 財布の中は空っぽだった。そこで、ATMでお金をおろした。My wallet was empty. So, I withdrew some money from the ATM.
- 日本に留学したいと思った。そこで、貯金を始めることにした。I decided I want to study abroad in Japan. To that end, I've resolved to start saving money.
- 部屋がとても汚かった。そこで、掃除をすることにした。The room was really dirty. Therefore, I decided to clean it.
Because で can indicate a means or cause, this grammar point is used to connect a situation to a deliberate, controllable action taken by the speaker.
- 電車に乗り遅れてしまった。そこで、会議に遅刻してしまった。I missed the train. Therefore, I was late for the meeting. (Unnatural Japanese)
- 冷蔵庫には何もなかった。そこで、買い物に行った。There was nothing in the fridge. So, I went shopping.
