として
As (i.e. in the role of), For
Structure
Noun + として + Noun
Explanation
When the particle と is used to indicate a result, it often takes on the meaning of 'as'. This sense of 'as' treats (A) as an established fact or position, which then becomes the basis for an opinion or description. By pairing this function of と with して (the て-form of する), the grammar point として sets up (A) as the specific standpoint from which (B) is being considered.
Although it is formed from two separate grammatical elements, として is generally treated as a single 副助詞 (adverbial particle). As such, it is almost always found attached directly to a noun.
- ケンさんは先生としては完璧だ。As a teacher, Ken is perfect.
- この部屋は仕事場としても使えます。This room can also be used as a workspace.
In its role as a 副助詞, として can also link a noun to a subsequent phrase, expressing that (B) is being defined by its capacity as (A).
- 彼の態度は学生として問題だ。His attitude is problematic as a student.
- これは個人としての意見です。This is my opinion as an individual.
Fun Fact
This use of と to frame a result is common when focusing on one specific aspect of something, while acknowledging that other aspects also exist. In short, it communicates that only (A) is being taken into account when stating (B).
- ヤマダ部長は上司としては厳しいけど、父親としては優しい。Manager Yamada is strict as a boss, but kind as a father.
