Structure
Explanation
~というのは事実だ is a pattern used to state emphatically that something (A) is 'true', 'a fact', or 'without a doubt'.
You can attach というのは to the end of most phrases. When followed by the noun 事実 'fact' and the auxiliary verb だ (or です), it declares that the preceding statement is factual.
- 昨日の夜、地震があったというのは事実だ。It's a fact that there was an earthquake last night.
- 山田さんが先生だというのは事実だ。It is a fact that Mr. Yamada is a teacher.
The literal meaning of というのは事実だ is 'the statement that (A) is a fact', since (A) is being nominalized. This expression is also frequently used with という omitted, making the assertion feel slightly less intense.
- 最後のケーキを食べたのは事実だ。It is true that I ate the last piece of cake.
- 私たちが大学で出会ったのは事実だ。It is a fact that we met in college.
